The Asscher diamonds are not heard of very often. Created by the Holland-based Asscher brothers in 1902, these diamonds are known for their uniqueness. While resembling an emerald cut in many ways, this particular diamond is shaped like a square instead of a rectangle. It has not been much in vogue recently however until the main lead of the television show, ‘Sex and the City’ started wearing it. The popularity increased many folds eventually with several Hollywood celebrities brandishing their niche Asscher diamond engagement rings. Kate Hudson went a step forward by showing off her whopping 5-carat Asscher diamond ring too. Gwyneth Paltrow followed suit when she received an Asscher diamond engagement ring as well. The cut remains a bit uncommon though and you may not be able to find it in every Dallas store offering diamond jewelry at present.
The wide facets of the diamond may vary from 58 to 72, which along with the clipped corners actually
make the diamond resemble more of an octagon than a square. There two different kinds of Asscher diamonds though. The one that is more commonly consists of 58 facets and is not patented. The Royal Asscher Cut was, however, introduced in 2001 and patented subsequently. You will not be able to buy it from anywhere else but from the company of the same name. The prefix of Royal was given by Queen Juliana of Holland in 1980 to the Asscher Diamond Company. An authentic Royal Asscher Cut diamond will also have a minuscule logo of the company inscribed by laser into the diamond.
Certified Loose Diamonds and Diamond Engagement Rings
It is perfectly alright to covet an Asscher diamond when you want something totally unique though. Remember to check out the characteristics before handing over your hard-earned money though. Asscher diamonds also happen to sport cropped corners just like the emerald cut but that does not mean that the two are identical. The square cut actually accentuates the depth of the stone and a perfect Asscher cut succeeds in drawing the eye immediately.
It is best to select a stone of good quality according to your budget when you are looking for Asscher diamonds. A color grading H is perfect for this cut although opting for an I is not quite advisable as more color is retained by this cut than the classic ones. VS2 will do when you are looking for clarity, however. Remember that you will only end up paying an exorbitant price when insisting on SI1 and SI2 grades as this particular cut is not known for its brilliance unlike the round or Princess cut. The inclusions are clearly visible in an Asscher diamond and you need to select one where such inclusions are obscure and not quite in the middle of the stone.
The Asscher diamonds make chic rings and look superb when set with the aid of four prongs. The solitaire is definitely more popular especially when it is to be given as an engagement ring yet an Asscher cut diamond ring with small accent stones has a classy yet gorgeous look too.
